Dancing Dialogue

A center for movement, music and dance-based arts supporting healing and self-expression.

All dance classes explore the concept that our bodies tell stories that speak of our experiences, dreams and fantasies, highlighting a multi-cultural use of stories, storytelling, art and art making, through self-expressive dance, music & rhythm.

Dr. Suzi Tortora, director and founder of the Dancing Dialogue: Healing and Expressive Arts Center has been a practicing dance/movement psychotherapist and has been teaching creative dance in NYC & the Hudson Valley Region for over 25 years. Creative & Modern Dance:

Focus This year: Translating musical listening into dancing expressions with an emphasis on the textures and emotionality of classical music

2 – 8 year olds
Enhance and preserve the natural dancer in your child, building confidence and self-awareness, as your child explores expressive dance styles and is introduced to the basics of creative and modern dance including: rhythm, musical awareness, developing body coordination and advancing motor skills.

Dancing Stories! A-B-C Pre-K (3¾ – 5 yr olds):

The next step in dance skill and body awareness, this class supports the child's transition to independence, and provides school readiness through dance & movement-based explorations. Activities include listening to and interpreting stories to create dancing choreographic sequences followed by drawing, writing and dancing their own stories. Story themes focus on pre-reading skills and emotional/social expression using dance and movement to explore concepts such as adverbs, opposites and prepositions (e.g. up/down, over/under, slow/medium/fast); creating shapes and pathways in space that relate to letters and numbers; and developing pro-group social skills such as turn taking, moving as a whole cohesive group, and different partnering combos such as dyads, triads, etc. These explorations will all occur within the context of creative dance explorations that support the child's continued enjoyment of the power of dance as a tool for self-expression.

Dancing Stories! Musical Adventures Level I (K – 1st grade):

This class builds upon the popular Dancing Stories! A-B-C taking the dancing children to the next step of dance skill and body awareness this year focusing on Musical Listening through classical music. For the new kindergartener and first grader this class supports the child who is eager to explore self-expression and supports school preparedness through dance & movement-based explorations.

Activities include listening to and interpreting music and stories to create dancing choreographic sequences followed by drawing, writing and dancing their own stories. Story themes focus on reading skills and emotional/social expression using dance and movement to explore concepts including creating shapes and pathways in space that relate to letters and numbers; and developing pro-group social skills such as turn taking, moving as a whole cohesive group, and different partnering combos such as dyads, triads, etc. These explorations will all occur within the context of creative dance explorations that support the child's continued enjoyment of the power of dance as a tool for
self-expression.

Dancing Stories! Musical Adventures Level II (2nd grade & up):

This class builds up Level 1 developing more modern dance technique and choreography creating both personal and group dance stories through explorations using all of the arts. In addition to classical music interpretation this class will work with modern music and also learn the language of dance by working with the Laban Notation Motif System used to describe the dynamics and feeling tones
in dance.

FAQ: When is my child ready to be in class independently?

If your child is close to four, but not there yet, here are some things to consider:

  • Is the child able or ready to begin to follow directions and work in a group for the whole class time?
  • Is the child ready for the next step in dance/movement exploration? We will be focusing on dance and movement skill development and mastery, expanding from the basics we have been focusing on such as hopping, jumping, and galloping.
  • If part of the reason you are in class is to have a shared group experience with your child, this is invaluable. We should wait a semester to start this more independent class.
